The Parable of the Ladder

It was the lucky day for three friends who were determined to find life’s treasure wherever it was hidden. They thought they will cover many miles and might spend a long time finding the treasure they’ve always longed for. In their mind, they expected to sail across the seas, dig deep into the ground to find it.

However, it’s like providence shone on them today. By some streak of chance, they came across a ladder. They had no idea who put the ladder there.

They climbed anyway.

It would be almost impossible to get to the top of this strange hill without the ladder.

At the top, with jaw-dropping expression on their faces, they found all they wanted, treasure that would last over five generations. This had to be a miracle. It came too easy. They were excited, thankful and got to work.

After a day’s work, counting and arranging the treasures. They settled to rest.
“We are a lucky generation”, Thaddeus said, “all set, all available to us, we got these on a platter of gold, didn’t we?”, he asked rhetorically.

“Yes”, Sean replied. “Wait a minute…. did we leave the ladder behind?”, he jolted like he suddenly remembered something.

His friends looked confused.

“Silly! don’t you know that if we’ve leave the ladder behind, so many others will find it and we can’t have this treasure to ourselves alone”

Nick cut in at this point. “We can’t exhaust these goodies in our entire lifetime, neither our children, nor our children’s children. We should share with others. This is what I will suggest we do. Let’s bring up the ladder, so no mere man gain access to the top of this hill. We’ll create an organisation or some association, yeah?”

The other friends clapped and nodded in agreement at this idea.

The friends withdrew the ladder to the top of the hill. No sooner had they done that than they saw a crowd of young folks trooping in. They had seen from the distance the glistering shinning treasures at the top of the hill, and had come all the way to grab a share.

To their chagrin, there was no way to get to the top to join our three lucky friends — Nick, Thaddeus and Sean.

Sean spoke from the top, looking down on the helpless fags who were looking up to him and his friends.
“Well young men”, he started, “this is an organisation, the abbreviation for our organisation is TSA — Treasure Seekers Association. Well, my friends, you can’t join so fast. There’s a process. Go through a course in the University called Treasure Science. Ensure you get good grades, a GPA within the range of a Distinction or Upper Credit. We have a recruitment process. Sadly we cannot take everyone, and that’s the reality. There are special examinations you might also need to write to boost your chances of getting to the top of this hill. Now run home and get to work, y’all. We’ll bring down the ladder for anyone who has met the requirement and wants to climb. Goodbye”.

Sighing, Nick said, “Wow!!! that worked well. Even though we got to the top so easily, we cannot make it appear to this young fellas that way. If they want this ladder, they would have to work and sweat it out”

“Perhaps, they could go find another ladder elsewhere”, Thaddeus added.

The day is over. It was time to close work at the TSA. Tomorrow is another day. It will take a few years before the first man will show up, who will be bold enough to want to climb to the top. For the meantime, the treasure is theirs to enjoy.
